Description

Description of heritage

  • Descriptif du centre d'interprétation
The town owes its name to Gaultier, abbot of Lesterps, who founded a priory there. The church dates from the end of the 11th century. Saint-Gaultier was a fortified town, the remains of the ramparts can still be seen in the gardens bordering the Creuse river and several testimonies of its history still remain in various places in the town: towers of former castles, location of the town gates, old streets (notably the rue du Cheval Blanc, probably in memory of the passage of King Henry IV in March 1589). The priory became a college in 1740 and then, thirty years later, a minor seminary. Today it is a mixed college. Nice view of the site of the priory from the road bridge over the Creuse river or from the greenway which takes the old railway viaduct.
